***MAJOR UPDATE*** updated 5/2/2020

cca application process is now digital

DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, THE ALAMEDA COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION HAS CANCELED ALL SCHOOLING ON CAMPUS FOR THE 2019/20 SCHOOL YEAR

Despite school sites closures to teachers and students during this time of Pandemic, quarantines, and social distancing; IHS admin and counselors are continuing the registration process for the 2020-2021 school year. As a result, we will be moving the CCA application process to fully digital format.

What this Means

The application itself, evidence of artistic interest and exploration, the applicant essay, teacher recommendations, and all other application materials will be submitted directly to both CCA coordinators via email.

Attached below are two digital applications for prospective 20/21 CCA students.

Considering the nature of the shelter-in-place and the confounding nature of the pandemic, the application due date has changed.

All applications must be submitted to both kavon@fusdk12.net AND tmintey@fusdk12.net by Friday, May 8th.

All middle school sites and principals have been notified and should have sent notice to all FUSD middle school families

How to Apply Digitally to the CCA

1. Select and complete the appropriate application for your admissions submission.

  • The MAGNET application is for all students who would be coming to IHS by way of the ARTS MAGNET. This means students who would normally attend one of the FUSD High Schools other than Irvington (American, Kennedy, Mission San Jose, or Washington) would need to fill out this digital application.
  • For students who would normally attend IHS for High School and would like to join the CCA, those applicants would use the INTERNAL digital application.

2. Complete the appropriate application.  For both types of applicants the process is easy:

  • Use the application checklist to make sure all required portions are completed. Check the correct box after the required portion is complete.
  • Fill in your name, birth date, current grade level, current school, home high school, parent/guardian name, home address, phone number, and email in the sections provided.
  • Have a parent/guardian of the applicant fill out the short paragraph as to why they want their child to join the CCA at Irvington High School.
  • Next the applicant should check the boxes for the types of visual and/or performing arts they are most interested in as well as which areas they are most likely to explore by way of the classes we offer.
  • Applicants will then check the boxes pertaining to which activities they do or would be interested in doing at home or in school.

3. Complete the applicant essay. Students will complete a separate informational essay using one of the two prompts from the application. This essay should be typed, saved, and attached to the same email the application and evidence are attached to.

4. Attach artistic evidence. Evidence of artistic interest gives the students an opportunity to show us what applicants have been doing to explore their creativity. Evidence should be current (NO earlier than the applicants' 6th grade year), and original to the applicant. Evidence is required to apply, no exceptions and should be attached to the email containing the application and essay.  Students can send evidence via the following digital formats:

  • Photos of visual art
  • Sound files of musical art
  • Videos of performing art

If the digital evidence is posted publicly on the internet, a URL may be typed onto the application or copy/pasted into the email.

5. Optional Introduction/Audition (MAGNET applicants only).  For applicants joining Irvington's CCA by way of the MAGNET waiver (switching to IHS versus their home school based on attendance boundaries) there is an optional video introduction/audition. This option gives us an opportunity to see and hear the students, helping us put a voice and face to the applications. Applicants can video themselves telling us who they are, what kinds of art they are interested in/currently participate in, and why they want to join the CCA. Additionally, students can show us examples of their visual art or perform for us. Videos should be no longer than 10 minutes and should be attached to the email containing the application, essay, and evidence. A link can be provided to the video as well as long as it is accessible.

6. Email the application, plus attachments.  Once everything is completed and all boxes on the checklist (application page 1), save the application and attach to email to be sent to tmintey@fusdk12.net AND kavon@fusdk12.net. Also attach the applicant essay, any supporting digital artistic evidence (or a working URL), and the digital video introduction/audition (OPTIONAL) to the email.

  • IF YOU ALREADY COMPLETED THE HARD-COPY OF THE APPLICATION PRIOR TO THE COVID-19 QUARANTINES, YOU MAY SCAN OR DIGITALLY PHOTOGRAPH ALL APPLICATION MATERIALS AND SEND THEM TO kavon@fusdk12.net AND tmintey@fusdk12.net PLEASE MAKE SURE ALL INFORMATION (TYPED OR HANDWRITTEN) IS LEGIBLE AND CORRECT

The application review process will now be starting April 27th, however some of the applications have been processed as they were received by the initial deadline. The application review process will take us about 2 weeks.  Once all applications are reviewed and our master list is complete, we will email notification letters to all applicants.

This whole process is new to us and will undoubtedly continue to present new challenges for us.

Thank you for your patience during this process and feel free to email Ms. Avon (kavon@fusdk12.net) and Mr. Mintey (tmintey@fusdk12.net) if you have any further questions.

Thanks to all who apply and good luck!

Sincerely,

Tully Mintey and Krista Avon
